Even if the first netbooks started off with a version of Linux in just a few years from launch more than 95% of the netbook OS market is dominated by Microsoft, with Windows XP and 7. In the tablets arena things are quite different, as the iPad OS (iOS) dominates cleary, followed by Android and Windows 7. Apparently Canonical, the company that has brought us Ubuntu is working on a special touch optimized version of their OS for tablets.

The software development phase is unclear right now, but we know Canonical will try and build a version compatible with ARM platforms also and will make it independent of keyboard and mouse, thus suitable for slate tablets. It’s interesting to see when the new version will come up, as analysts say it won’t be before the Ubuntu 10.10 launch, slated for this autumn.
