Remember the last week rumor with a thinner Toshiba tablet? That materialized today with the Toshiba AT200 Excite, announced at IFA Berlin as world’s thinnest 10.1 inch tablet at only 7.7mm (0.303 inch). That’s an achievement no matter what you say, but weight is not in line with the thinness, as at 1.2 lbs it’s much heavier than the 0.73 lbs Samsung Galaxy TAB 7.7.

Personally I don’t care that much about weight and thinness as long as those values are kept reasonable, but I do care about the looks of the Toshiba AT200 Excite, which features a brushed Gray aluminium back case and pronounced rounded edges. There’s also a metallic ring over the front facing 2MP camera. The nice design continues on the back where the 5MP camera is encased into a black plastic area that features also a LED flash light. If you look at the Toshiba AT200 Excite from the side you’ll observe a sandwich style profile made from two aluminium top and bottom parts and a black rubbery band in between. Now let’s head on to specs.

    Toshiba AT200 Excite:

    • 10.1-inch 1280×800 LCD display
    • 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP 4430
    • 1GB DDR2 RAM
    • Built-in storage up to 64GB
    • microSD, microUSB, and microHDMI
    • 5MP and 2MP cameras
    • 7.7mm, 558g
    • Up to 8 hour battery life
    • Android 3.2 Honeycomb (no custom user interface)

As you can see from the specs there are quite a few ports, but not full size, as we’ve seen on the Toshiba Thrive, a much chunkier tablet. So you do get microSD, microUSB and microHDMI. Get ready to invest in some cables, I’d say. Also a major change from the previous Toshiba tablet is the CPU:  TI OMAP 4430 1.2GHz instead of your usual 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2. If you take a look at the preview video to the bottom of this post you’ll see the new architecture is quite speedy, possibly helped by the Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS, the latest version available.

There’s no word on pricing and availability at this point, but Toshiba is expecting to be able to deliver the AT200 Excite before the end of the year, which means there will be some serious competition during the Christmas season.
