Google is preparing for the launch of Android version 3.0, codenamed Gingerbread sometime in October, bringing support for more powerful hardware and an interesting array of new features, an intuitive interface and support for services like Google Music.
Many tablet manufacturers are waiting for Google’s release to bring to market their tablets, which are not quite up to their full potential when using previous Android versions like 2.1 and 2.2 (some tablets are even shipping with Android 1.6). Motorola is in the waiting queue and so is Samsung. I bet that even other big names are waiting for the third iteration of Google Android which will bring features like over 1GHz CPU’s, more than 512 MB RAM, 1280 x 760 pixels maximum resolution and displays with at least 3.5 inches in diagonal.
As you can see from those specs it’s clear that some of the older tablets and smartphones could get upgraded to Android 3.0 Gingerbread (Dell Streak for example), but don’t count on this to happen, as the choice is for manufacturers to make, not Google. It’s interesting to see how Google will address the security concerns some have over the screening of the apps that go into the Android Marketplace.
