There’s no doubt in my mind that tablets and other mobile computing devices will be the first choice of consumers in a few years when it comes to buying a new device for their personal computing needs. You don’t have to a genius to see that and many reports have shown an increasingly growing trend in tablet sales lately.

Even so it’s always nice to see some numbers that confirm the hunch so here’s a new study made in Germany, this time about the distribution of screen sizes under 12 inch and the hardware specs of those devices. It seems that in 10 months time the number of sub 12 inch PCs has almost tripled and from those most are 10 and 11 inch devices. Standard resolution is 1024 x 600 pixels but the trend flows toward 1366 x 768 pixel screens, better suited for web browsing, that appeared in vast majority in Q1 2010.

From all those devices around 78% are running on an Atom CPU, only 5% are powered by Linux or a variation of it and the ratio of glossy to matte displays is 3:2 , plus only 10% of them weight less than 1 kg. The only disappointing thing about this report, at least for me, is the lack of powerful hardware in mobile computing, as you already know my take on Atom CPUs, which are too slow for modern day tasks.
