I'm sure you remember the ASUS Padfone, a concept showcased by the company last year, which features an Android smartphone that can be docked inside a case, becoming instantly a slate tablet. Motorola has something similar, called the [easyazon-link asin="B004M17D62" locale="us"]Atrix dock[/easyazon-link], which uses a laptop shell instead of a tablet body. These two concepts would allow in theory to switch between the extremely portable smartphone format to a 'fully' functional PC, thus allo...
One of the players no one saw coming into the tablet race a few months ago is Amazon, a company known for pushing its services to consumers through subsidies for various popular products that are used as a gateway for purchasing content from Amazon. The Kindle eReader was the first example of this brilliant strategy, then followed the Amazon Kindle Fire at the end of 2011.Now it seems Amazon wants to strike one again into the eBook competition with a color eInk 6 inch eReader. This could be ...
Yesterday was February 17th, the day RIM was supposed to launch the BB OS 2.0 for the 7 inch Playbook tablet. As we've anticipated that didn't happen, and now there's strong evidence the software update will arrive on February 21th next week.Four days isn't that much and I'm willing to live with that, as it seems RIM has prepared a few official apps (read native) that will be available with the new OS version. Most notable ones are the Twitter and Kindle apps. Expect also quite a few titles ...
The big difference between iOS and Android, a difference 99% of you won't see and won't care about is the fact Google's operating system is supposed to be open-source, so that anyone could build upon the source core and make their own customized little Android version. That's on paper, as almost all manufacturers lock the bootloader to prevent users from installing their own version of the ROM with customizations that go beyond what the stock version can provide. You also can't install your o...
One of my problems with Android devices in general is the slow adoption of the new versions, since all manufacturers have to change the code and include drivers and support for functions only featured by their products. It's not as easy as installing Windows and requires some serious changes in some cases, when manufacturers want to introduce their own UI customizations.Add to that the fact that some companies like Samsung have tons of Android products and you'll see why Android 4.0 ICS is t...
I hope you remember the ASUS Transformer TF300T, a previous leak from which we've only gathered a few design details. I've god some fresh info about it as a Polish website got in possession of a spreadsheet detailing some of the specs (or so they claim). From what I gather the ASUS TF300T is meant to be a cheaper alternative to the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer Prime as it starts with only 16 GB of storage (and stops there), gets a lower clocked Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU (1.2 GHz vs 1.3) has no LED Flash...
Fujitsu was once one of the highest rated computer manufacturers in the world, back in the day of their partnership with Siemens, but things have gone bad for them in the past 6-7 years, where their biggest problem, according to my own perception of the company, was a completely outdated lineup when it comes to design and a continuous failure to adapt prices to what others were offering.Add the lack of innovation and you'll see why Fujitsu is today where it is (the bottom, in case you didn't...
I've been talking a lot lately about handwriting recognition, stylus support and such, as a lot of you have expressed regret that 99% of today's tablets can't transform handwriting into text, like old tablet PCs can (and the new ones powered by Windows 7).For many business users handwriting recognition is a must. It's not rocket science to implement it at operating system level, or by special apps (Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet is one such example), but probably Apple and Google didn't want to both...
Once again the myth that people are looking for features and performance in a tablet has been smashed, as a recent report shows RIM has gained significant market share in Canada over the massive price cuts of its Blackberry Playbook tablet, with more than 15% of Canadians now owning a 7 inch RIM tablet. That's a 10% market share increase in just a few months. In US the increase probably wasn't that significant, not because Americans don't like RIM, but because in the States Amazon is king of ...
One of the things that made the iPad special was the fact you didn't need a stylus to use it, like it happened with the first tablet PCs. After the iPad pretty much every manufacturer has signed up to this trend and today the stylus is a very rare occurrence when it comes to slate tablets. That doesn't mean we've completely forgot about the good old stylus, as products like HTC Flyer, Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, and Samsung Galaxy Note use it for taking notes and even handwriting recognition on L...
