Amazon Kindle Fire is the $199 multimedia tablet you’ll want

I've always said tablets need to be cheaper, something like 200-300$ maximum, to become mainstream. Now Amazon is proving it has the same belief as it just announced the Kindle Fire (as rumored yesterday), a cheap 7 inch tablet with a clear multimedia focus: eBooks, movies, music, browsing and related actions. And cheap is the word of the day here: just $199 will get you this beauty. It's not a complete tablet, not by a long shot since it lacks 3G, a microphone and a camera, but it has everyt...

Toshiba Thrive 7 announced – a little surprise in the 7 inch segment

Toshiba Thrive was one of the good Honeycomb tablets in 2011 [read our articles about it] thanks to its array of full size ports, but it was pretty bulky. Toshiba remedied that with the AT200 announced at IFA Berlin, but what we didn't expect is for the company to announce officially a smaller 7 inch Thrive called simply Thrive 7. I guess right now the first model should be called Thrive 10.Anyway, you might want to take a look at this little thing, as it solves almost completely the bulk ...

Let's now take a l...

Asus launches rugged Tough ETBW11AA 7 inch tablet

It's surprising that Asus didn't announced or hinted at the Tough ETBW11AA, a rugged 7 inch slate it just launched in Japan together with KDDI wireless carrier. While no confirmation has been made if and when this tablet will make it to the rest of the world, there are reasons we would like to see it here.Let's start with the software: the ASUS Tough ETBW11AA is the first commercial 7 inch tablet with Android 3.2 Honeycomb and a high resolution 1280 x 800 pixels display, more than all othe...

Amazon’s tablet is called Kindle Fire

As the date for the new Amazon tablet nears launch it's normal for more info to transpire. As of today we know the name of the 7 inch ereader/multimedia tablet slate will be Amazon Kindle Fire.Amazon decided to use a distinctive naming scheme to make sure people don't mistake it for the Kindle eReader, but still understand what's all about. Only time will tell if this strategy will pay off.Anyway, besides the Kindle Fire name we know one important thing: the reference hardware design wa...

Apple reduces production for iPad 2 by 25%. What could this mean?

After over 18 months of constant production ramp-up for its tablet Apple is now reported to have reduced demand from its suppliers by as much as 25% from 17 million units to only 13 for Q4 2011.Could this mean Apple is having consumer demand problems? Not likely, as there are quite a few hypothesis running around. The first is that Apple is now building iPad 3 tablets for the upcoming launch. Personally this makes no sense to me, as Apple will have a great Christmas season so it needs more u...

Motorola Xoom 2 to come in 10.1 and 8.2 inch versions

We've got used already with leaks as a way to find out info before official product announcements, and the latest Motorola X00m 2 'unveiling' is here. What we didn't expect was to see two versions of the Xoom2: a normal 10.1 inch version and a smaller 8.2 inch model, both bearing the 'Fleming' codename.Compared to the current Motorola Xoom tablet the new models are slimmer (~9mm/0.35 inch) and feature a distinctive design with metal back panels surrounded by what seem to be plastic frames. ...

Amazon to officially announce the Kindle tablet next week, on September 28

One of the most awaited and at the same time unexpected tablets of 2011 is the Amazon Kindle tablet [see details], a cheap 7 inch device that can be better described as an advanced eBook reader. With an expected retail price of only $250, half the price of the Apple iPad 2, and tight integration with all the services offered by Amazon analysts are looking forward to get their hands on one, and I can't disagree with them until we know more about it.And that's going to happen sometime next wee...
