In a world where everyone makes 10 inch slate tablets it’s hard to distinguish yourself from competitors or the iPad, the tablet that has set the trend. LG almost did it with the Optimus Pad/G-slate, world’s first 3D tablet and apparently ASUS thinks that’s a good idea, so they’re following on LG’s footsteps by hinting on Twitter of an official presentation during Milan’s Design Week exhibition.

It’s known that many ASUS products have won various design awards, so is only natural for the Taiwanese to announce a gorgeous 3D tablet at a fashion show like the one taking place in Milan in April. ASUS even made a childish poster that confirms somehow their intention with an Italian speech bubble that can be roughly be translated to “Hey! Am I a 3D tablet?“. Really subtle ASUS!

Is a 3D tablet the solution to all problems?

Now, back to the meaning of ASUS’ own 3D tablet, as I want to comment a little bit on all this 3D scheme. Personally I see a few major problems with 3D products these days: they’re expensive for no other reason that it’s NEW technology, you have to wear glasses that cost money, need recharging and make you look silly or make your head spin after a while, plus for me the worst of all: it’s not 3D, as you just have a foreground and a background plane, predefined, so you can’t even focus on what you want to see.

All those problems add up to the one specific to 3D tablets: it’s not portable to transport a tablet plus the required 3D glasses with you all the time. Now you understand why I don’t believe 3D tablet will really take off until glasses are no longer needed and prices come down to an earthly level.

Am I wrong to believe this?
