If you’ve followed our Dell Streak hands on preview or all the other news about this 5 inch tablet you already know that one of the biggest problems with it is the Android 1.6 OS, an antiquated version of Google’s Open Source software. Even if distributors and mobile operators are saying that firmware upgrades are coming for the Streak, no official info was released by Dell, so you don’t know yet what to expect, or when.
It seems that now O2, the operator selling the Streak in UK, has confirmed it will offer the upgrade to Android 2.1 later this week, possibly on 1st of September. This new update will offer 720p recording capabilities to the Streak, along with live wallpapers, native multitouch and a small speed boost.
Unfortunately we don’t have any word from Dell, about its plans to do the same with the AT&T version of the Streak sold in US. Probably an update is in works, but rest assured we’ll tell you when the rumor becomes news.
