I believe that slate tablets need to be small, slim and low weight to catch on to people as a navigation/multimedia device that you can use while sitting in a bus, waiting on a line and such. A 10 inch diagonal screen means it’s not pocketable at all and I find the 7 inch diagonal (like the first netbooks from ASUS) the sweet spot. Netbook Navigator, a pretty unknown manufacturer, thinks the same as it announced the 701A-NN slate type tablet running Windows 7 Starter edition on a 7 inch multi touch screen with 800 x 480 pixels resolution (I would have liked to see at least 1024 x 600 pixels, but for that you must buy the bigger and more expensive 891A-NN).

The power of Netbook Navigator 701A-NN comes from an Intel Atom Z510 CPU running at 1.1 GHz, 1 GB RAM and a 32 GB solid state drive (that’s nice as it adds speed and toughness). In the 1.5 lbs package there are all the connectivity options you could expect from a mobile device in 2010: Bluetooth, WiFi, WLAN and 3G (HSDPA or CDMA options are available). The 2200 mAh battery is good for about 4 hours of use, which I guess is enough for occasional browsing and multimedia files watching, but you should always plan ahead when traveling long distances. I’ll keep you updated about when this thing becomes available.
