We all know that the Japanese market is a little different from what we’re used to, as they pretty much dig anything different, no matter how strange it would look to us (the others). That’s why a lot of manufacturers are launching products especially designed for that market, like the Lifetouch 7 inch tablet from NEC, powered by Android 2.1 OS.

General looks of the device resemble a mobile gaming console (like the Nintendo DS) and feature a D-Pad for easy navigation in menus and other apps like the browser.

NEC Lifetouch comes in white and features a pretty big list of accessories and ports:

    • ARM Cortex A8 CPU
    • 7 inch screen, 800 x 480 pixels resolution
    • 256MB RAM
    • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
    • Bluetooth Ver.2.1 + EDR
    • 3MP camera
    • GPS
    • accelerometer
    • internal mono mic
    • internal stereo speakers
    • SD/SDHC slot, two USB 2.0 ports
    • 8 hours of battery life

Even if the 7 inch NEC Lifetouch looks more like a device for kids, NEC markets it as a gadget for your typical business man also, as it offers access to cloud computing storage on NEC servers. It remains to be seen how this is integrated with the Android OS. Notable, on the negative side, is the lack of a 3G chip, which makes us wonder if the Lifetouch will ever be connected to the Android Marketplace (it would be bad not to be connected). NEC will also provide a stylus for Lifetouch, hope it will be a capacitive stylus (you know why…).

NEC Lifetouch will surface in stores in Japan in October. Maybe by then we’ll know the price and international availability (if any).
