I can’t stop sometimes and laugh at Microsoft, when Steve Ballmer makes bold statements, that they’re gonna crush the competition, that they have a really amazing product in works and such. Let’s face it, Microsoft is a big company, and can’t afford to tell people they’re weak, that they weren’t able to do something in time or anything like that (like it happened to search, online advertising and tablet wars). I do understand how things with investors, shares, market value work (at least at basic level) and know that your image reflects on your income, so I get why Steve is doing what he’s doing, but can’t stop launghing.
Now, let’s see the last bit of news that had put a smile on my face: Steve told the press that Microsoft is going full guns after the iPad, with, wait, wait… Windows 7. Yeap, I sincerely hope they’re gonna change something as you already know my take on Windows 7 Slates: they’re too slow and the OS is not really suited for precise touch input in 10-12 inch format screens. Even if Windows 7 means flexibility and tons of apps out there it’s too slow for a pleasant mobile experience on a small device. Steve didn’t really comment how things are changing, but probably a special Tablet Service Pack is in works, that will slim down the Windows installation (too many processes running in background) and will offer some additional tweaks for finger and pen input.
Steve also has great trust in the upcoming low voltage CPUs from Intel, the Oak Trail series (yeap, more power solves everything…). So now we’ll have to wait and see the next Microsoft move.
