I don’t know if you still remember last year’s LG G-Slate (also known as Optimus Pad), an expensive 8.9 inch tablet with limited 3D capabilities. LG has pretty much abandoned that project and just redesigned the whole thing from the ground up.

That’s why today the Korean company officially announced the LG Optimus Pad LTE, a tablet that uses the same 8.9″ form factor, but adds updated components. As the name suggests, the tablet supports LTE data networks, so it will make it to US at some point, even if for now it will only be available in Korea.

Let’s take a quick look at the main specs:

    • Operating System: Android 3.2 Honeycomb
    • Memory: User 32GB (Micro SD up to 32GB)
    • Size: 245 x 151.4 x 9.34 mm
    • Weight: 497 g
    • Display: 8.9-inch IPS True HD Display
    • Resolution: 1280 x 768
    • Camera: 8MP (Rear) / 2MP (Front)
    • Processor: Qualcomm 1.5GHz Dual-Core / Dual Channel Processor
    • Battery: 6,800mAh
    • Others: HDMI, DLNA

As you can see, the major problem is that LG Optimus Pad LTE still runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but that should change in the weeks (or months) to come. Overall the tablet is a significant improvement over last year’s model, as it features more powerful components while being slimmer (9.34mm) and ligher (497 grams).

The huge 6800 mAh battery is said to last at least 10 hours of typical use. There are also some preloaded apps, including a video editor that supports 1080p clips (the ones taken by the back facing 8 megapixel camera, for example). Overall a  nice tablet, but we know that’s not enough to succeed: the price is very important, but LG hasn’t said anything about that at this point.
