There are quite a few articles on AllTouchTablet about touchscreen technologies and future types of interfaces that might replace current ones, so here’s another one, GestIC, a concept that uses electric field sensing to detect 3D spacial movement away from the detector. The technology was developed by a German research company Ident.

The Gesture Cube
This technology was better explained with the use on a Gesture Cube prototype that reacts to user commands by changing the info displayed on it’s 5 screens (the sixth is inaccessible because of the main foot). If I were to compare GestIC with something that would be Microsoft’s Natal Project, a future type of gaming controller that detects what the user does in front of the camera. Below there’s a short video showing what Gesture Cube is capable of, and it’s pretty amazing to say the least.
I think GestIC is closer to Minority Report that anyone would have imagined a few years ago when the movie was made. This proves that SciFi has a lot to do with science rather than fiction most times.
