We’ve talked about Pixel Qi dual mode screen a wile ago, highlighting its extraordinary characteristics: normal LCD mode and low power eReader mode when viewed outdoors. It seems that Pixel Qi has some production problems, meaning they can’t find a factory to manufacture their displays. Another competitor, this time a traditional display manufacturer, has managed to build a prototype similar to Pixel Qi, called CPT transflexive display, one that can operate at 50% the power requirements of current LCD displays, but at 200 nits of luminosity and 400:1 contrast ratio.
The resolution of the prototype is HD ready (1366 x 768 pixels) but future models could outperform this limitation. A short video below shows the CPT transflexive prototype in works, but no other details like availability and pricing are revealed at this time. This is to be expected, as demand for those hybrid technologies is still limited. Nonetheless, I’m glad manufacturers are taking LCD power consumption and outside readability seriously again.
