Despite rumors from last week’s CES show about ASUS working on a 3G enabled Transformer Prime, it seems the company doesn’t have any such plans at this time to offer a Prime TF201 tablet with 3G or even 4G LTE capabilities.
I know most consumers don’t care for that, but for users always on the go this is a must have feature, something they can’t live without. And before jumping to any conclusions, I think the problem lies into the tablets’s design, which uses a full metal back case that has shown issues with the GPS receiver signal already.
I believe that’s the reason ASUS will opt out of 3G capabilities for the Transformer Prime TF201. Most likely the high end Transformer Prime TF700t, the one with a Full HD screen and redesigned back case will receive the 3G/4G LTE upgrade, but that’s not going to happen until later this year.
The second part of this post is about the Android 4.0 ICS software update, which isn’t as bullet proof as thought before: it seems that some owners are getting a Serial Number Unknown error when trying go upgrade from Honeycomb 3.2. ASUS is working on solving this problem, but no official fix was reported, except a few steps to follow, which sometimes can work.
And for those still stuck with the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer, the 1st generation, there’s good news: the Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is now submitted to Google for approval. It should be available shortly, infusing a new life into last year’s Transformer tablet. I’ll keep you updated on these three matters, as updates come along.
