We’ve talked here several times about the Acer Aspire 1820PT convertible tablet, but just now there’s more official info about availability and price for one of the most anticipated convertible tablets around. Why is the Acer 1820PT so interesting? Well, mainly because it’s a powerful tablet with a very affordable price (think a little above other netbook tablets) but with a Core 2 Duo CPU, up to 8 GB RAM and 320 GB Hard drive.
Official pricing will start at 599 EUR in Europe so expect something like 599$ in US, which will get you a 11.6 inch glossy capacitive touchscreen (multitouch enabled) and Windows 7 Home Premium, all in a glossy casing with some piano black finishes I don’t find particularly attractive. An accelerometer will ensure automatic switching between landscape and portrait modes and WiFi, HDMI output, gigabit Ethernet port and optical audio port complete this rather nice tech package.

Classic convertible tablet look but with a more high end finish
Acer said nothing about battery life but I hope it’s at least rated at 4-5 hours. The Acer 1820PT is expected in Europe soon and in US in a few months. I hope they remember the 1420P and tell us something about that too.

Once folded the footprint is not that big

Acer has a product page for this system — http://us.acer.com/acer/seu30e.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&link=ln374e&CountryISOCtxParam=US&acond125e=68403&kcond48e.c2att101=68403&sp=page17e&ctx1g.c2att92=145&ctx2.c2att1=0&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2993743370 — and the specs promise up to 8 hours of battery life, which makes this a very exciting system indeed if that $599 estimate that’s been floating around is anything like accurate.
I’m skeptical about the claim that this has capacitative touchscreen. Is that coming straight from Acer? According to a review I’ve found for the PTZ, which is the same system but with Intel Dual Core instead of Core 2 Duo (http://forums.vr-zone.com/notebooks-netbooks/521303-acer-aspire-1820ptz-convertible-tablet-first-impressions-mini-review.html), the system includes a stylus and features pressure sensitive inking, which I wasn’t aware was possible with capacitative touch. I’m wondering if this might be resistive multitouch more akin to the Asus T101MT. The review does mention switching between finger and pen modes for touch, so it could be there’s something else going on. Either way, sounds promising for inking, especially as there’s palm rejection.
Both screen and trackpad support multitouch gestures in Windows 7, and there’s a stylus too which can be used for more accurate handwriting recognition

I think the 1820 models had resistive screens and its the new 1825 models due out soon that will have capacative screens. Havent seen an 1820 in the flesh so cant confirm this is the case for sure.
As I understand it the model has been discontinued in the UK.
Perhaps it will be available elsewhere.
I don’t understand how it can be discontinued as it was not even appeared in shops… but I guess that’s another mystery we’re going to accept as is.
