Chrome OS is an old story, but one that hasn’t reached climax yet, as Google didn’t launched it officially yet. So we’re left with a few images and short video teasers from last year. But now we know the general strategy of Google, as Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, recently mentioned in an interview to Reuters that Chrome OS is coming and will be the OS of choice for netbooks, competing clearly here with the MeeGo (the child of Intel and Nokia partnership).
At the same time Android 3.0 is pushed forward for high end smartphones and tablets. What I don’t understand is how the difference between tablets and netbooks is computed. If you look at the Windows 7 universe you see that the netbooks and slates share the same hardware, except the QWERTY keyboard that’s physical in one case, and virtual in the other one. Also I have my doubts about the actual differences between Chrome OS and Android 3.0, as both OSes will be heavily optimized and integrated with all Google services.
Add to that the fact Google intends to expand into Music and TV (with Google TV), as it signed some partnerships with Samsung to integrate those services, and you have a real mess here. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Google’s strategy is that clear to all of us as it is for Eric Schmidt.
