Blackberry News app released. What it does and why should you care

Since I've received the Blackberry Playbook last week RIM managed to make it look better and better each day by releasing software updates and adding new interesting apps, the only thing that this tablet lacks right now. The latest arrival is the Blackberry News app, essentially an RSS reader that makes reading news a little bit nicer on the 7 inch high resolution screen, which by the way, I've found out to have a higher pixel density than my already eye-killing Full HD laptop screen. The app is...

Dell’s next tablet, Streak 10, will launch first in China, then US

Dell hasn't been really successful in the tablet market, even though they've launched the Dell Streak 5 last year and the Streak 7 early in 2011. Those tablets didn't really caught on to consumers, and Dell is now blaming the US market, with too much control of wireless carriers, which are not prepared to get a correct pricing scheme for tablets and with lots of problems generated by the immature Android operating system especially made for slates. At least that's what Dell's executives say....

HP Touchpad debuts on July 1st for $500

HP TouchPad [read our comprehensive overview] is one of the most anticipated tablets of 2011, being the first one on market running WebOS, the operating system Palm used in their latest smartphones, which proved to be a success as multitasking and easy of use are concerned. Under this legacy HP, who bought Palm last year, is now releasing their tablet that promises to bring lots of improvements to the tablet concept, so it won't be just another (Android) tablet. Of course all those glorious sta...

Dell’s 7 inch slider prototype: why didn’t they built this?

I don't know if you remember the UMPC concept, the ultra-mobile PC that preceded tablets a few years ago. There were quite a few models on market, but they all had problems: either price too high (over 2000$) or too slow and hard to use. Today it surfaced that Dell was working on a 7 inch slider tablet prototype, with a full QWERTY keyboard that featured an interesting split keys design to help with thumb typing so you don't have to put the tablet on a flat surface and start typing, making part...

Windows 8 tablet built by Microsoft? There’s a chance for it to happen

Windows 8 is quickly becoming a hot topic, especially since last week's impressive User Interface demo from Microsoft and now the latest rumor points towards a mysterious tablet built by the Redmond company itself. It's not the first time we see the manufacturer of the operating system dipping its toes into hardware (think of Google with Nexus smartphones for example) and it's clear Microsoft has the experience from many successful hardware products it launched throughout time (Xbox 360, Kinect,...

OnLive cloud gaming service demo on tablets at E3

I don't know if you remember, but we've mentioned briefly the OnLive cloud gaming service when we've talked about the HTC Flyer 7 inch Android tablet. As a reminder, OnLive is an unique way to play the most demanding games on the least powerful devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops. How OnLive took the cloud concept and applied it to gaming is very interesting: servers thousands of miles away from the gamer act like remote consoles, controlled from distance by OnLive subscribers with the...

Blackberry Playbook WiFi available at Sprint. 4G version to come this summer

One of the most underrated tablets, because of the lack of apps, the Blackberry Playbook, picked yet another wireless carrier to help reach more consumers. Sprint just announced availability of the WiFi only Blackberry Playbook tablet for the same $499 price you'll going to see in other stores.Since it hasn't got a 4G data chip inside Sprint can't offer a monthly plan for us to subscribe to, so no subsidy here: you have to pay full price for the WiFi Playbook. If you have your doubts, as man...

Sony S1 tablet passes FCC with flying colors. Will arrive in 4 models

After yesterday's news about the dual screen Sony S2 tablet passing FCC tests, it's time for the bigger 9.4 inch brother, the Sony S1 tablet, to pass the same tests which means release date is imminent and the product can safely be sold in US. As with each early unit that goes through FCC there's little info known, so here's what we've found out about the Sony S1 Android tablet: there will be four models, SGPT111US/S, SGPT112US/S, SGPT111CA/S and SGPT112CA/S, presumably two for Canada and tw...

Viewsonic ViewBook 730: a $250 Android tablet/eReader

In a market where usual tablets sell for around $500, everything half the price is deemed to be considered a no-name product from China, but that's changing, as in past months a lot of known manufacturers have announced (MSI, Archos for example) or launched cheap tablets that cost around $250. The latest is Viewsonic with the ViewBook 720, an Android tablet/eReader, which will debut at the end of June for the aforementioned price. What makes the Viewsonic ViewBook 730 different is that it's n...

Blackberry Playbook Tablet OS Update 1.0.5: features list

It's been only a week since I've got the Blackberry Playbook and the 7 inch tablet has already received a second update, the Blackberry Tablet OS 1.0.5 which slowly but steadily improves on RIM's tablet. There is a list of the changes on RIM's blog, but since you don't like to read too much (I know I don't) this post will be a short walk-through of what you do get in this 300+ MB update. I have to say Apple's decision to implement over-the-air updates that push only delta information (data tha...
