2011 was clearly sill the year of the iPad, with the second generation maintaining a serious lead, but Android tablets are closing in to Apple, and we’ve got a market study to back up these claims.

The numbers from Q4 2011 don’t lie so here they are: Apple sold 15.4 million tablets while Android slates reached 10.5 (mind you that’s from all other manufacturers combined). This means almost 58% market share for Apple and 39% for Android, which can thank its growth to the Amazon Kindle Fire cheap tablet.

While the numbers show Apple still in lead it’s safe to assume that its market share could slip under 50% in 2012, as we start seeing better and better Android slatest (Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, ASUS EEE Pad Transformer just to name a few). Also this is a trend already, if we compare the numbers from Q4 2011 to the same quarter of 2010 when Apple used to hold no less than 68% of the tablet market and Android struggled at just 29%.

Microsoft didn’t exist back in 2012 (0% market share), but it managed to reach a paltry 1.5% last year. I’m curious how much the things will change this year in the tablet niche, but I guess it all depends on how good the iPad 3 will be. Also Microsoft is a company to watch, but even if Windows 8 tablets are as good as I think, they’ll arrive too late this year to make an impact. Here’s the summary of this study:
