There was some debate back in January when Apple announced the iPad slate tablet and its brand new book store, which will cut deep into Amazon’s own book store for Kindle. Some speculated that this ain’t going to happen because Apple’s policy to retain only 30% from the profits will make them increase the price of one single eBook so much that it won’t be viable for people to buy it.
Apparently Apple gave e thorough thought to the price level needed to be set and come up with an interesting scheme, where eBook pricing is the same as on Amazon’s own store, thus throwing the ball in the competition’s yard. For example New York Time’s best sellers are all 9.99$, with a few other titles selling for 12.99$.
I’m really curious what Amazon will do now, as they’ve already increased the sales share publishers receive a few days before Apple’s iPad announcement. I think Amazon could have waited a little and not throw its ace on the table so soon.
