Told you the iPad is an entertainment device, not a work tablet. It seems that even commercial airlines are thinking the same, as some are planning to release in-flight entertainment systems centered on iPads. The first company to announce it will use the iPad as an in-flight entertainment delivery platform is Bluexbox Avionics. Not much details were released like availability, cost and the degrees of freedom planned. I suppose they’ll use some kind of app to limit users from downloading their own materials and a few media files will be already uploaded on the device.
There’s also the question of how will they prevent passengers from retaining the iPads once the airplane lands safely. I can’t see the iPad mounted on the back of the seat in front of you but I can imagine it being linked with some kind of secure chain to the seat, allowing you to handle it like you normally would (kind of), but making sure at the same time you are not tempted to keep it (unless you pay a premium for that particular flight).
Those being said, we salute the initiative to deliver alternate entertainment solutions to passengers. Hope others will follow and we’ll soon look forward on those long flights that reunite us with our families or work.

In-flight iPad entertainment is coming
