iPad is popular, we all know that, but it’s not complete without a few accessories that bring extra functionality or protection to your gadget. iPad cases are one such category of extras for iPad, but there are quite a few types of cases that you could purchase. For me the most practical ones are hard cases, because they have a few advantages over others: an iPad hard case doesn’t add too much to the bulk of the iPad, protects it against scratches and smudges and helps make your tablet look different then the other few millions out there. A hard case for iPad doesn’t substitute a carrying case, but adds robustness to your ‘investment’.
This post is dedicated to the best iPad hard cases you can find in stores at this moment. Of course the methodology I’ve used is pretty subjective (I’m human, by the way) and takes into consideration looks, prices and user reviews. I haven’t seen or tested the majority of the hard cases presented here, but rest assured I’ve documented this post before making the list. So here it is, my list of favorite iPad hard cases:
Wow, that’s a long name, but it tells you almost everything you wish to know about this hard case: it imitates carbon fiber, is made from leather on exterior and a polycarbonate shell inside to keep the iPad protected against violent contact with hard surfaces, unintentional or not. As a general note it’s one of the slimmest profiles you can get for your iPad with a case and offers access to all the ports. Price is adequate for this kind of quality and protection.

Some iPad hard cases are tough just to look at, but some like the Otterbox Defender series case are tough also on the inside, thanks to the three layers of polycarbonate material used throughout the structure. The back can be splitted in two parts, one going over the screen during transportation, so that the most important piece of the tablet gets protected.
A snap-off portion of the case can be removed while you charge/sync your iPad, so you don’t need to take it off the case, which also makes for a perfect iPad desk stand if you would like to read/type on the iPad in a more comfortable manner. Silicon plugs seal off the ports of the iPad while you use it in tougher environments. For this price, the Otterbox Defender series case for iPad is a very good investment.

This is really a rugged hard case for iPad. Just look at the tegulated rear surface that resembles an alligator (also give a better grip, not just better looks) and you’ll understand the Hard Candy Steet Skin is made to last. The thing is that you have access to all your iPad controls, but they are also protected at the same time. Installation is a breeze, as the design features also snap-on integrated screen enclosure while the TPU rubber skin snugs tight the iPad for better protection, less stretching and easier cleaning. If you don’t like the black version you can get the pink or clear Hard Candy Street Skin when in stock.

Basically, Macally METROLPAD consists of a hardshell back panel with silicon edges for increased protection and grip. Of course all iPad controls and ports are accessible even when the case is mounted on your tablet. Installation is very easy to do, as the silicon edge is form fitting allowing for quick and easy removal of the iPad. The whole case is crystal clear, thus preserving the original looks of your Apple product. If you’re looking for something with a design that stands out check out the other products in the list as Macally METROLPAD is made to conserve, not enhance your tablet.

This is one of the cheapest quality hard cases for iPad, featuring a very thin smooth surface that fits very close to your iPad. Add to that the inclusion of a folding stand in the package you’re getting from iLuv and you have a real deal here with the Durable Ultra Thin Clear Case. As with the Macally, this one also is meant to protect the looks of your iPad, as it comes from the factory for longer, keeping smudges and scratches away.

This is one interesting hard case for iPad with 4-in-1 functionality: Slim hard shell case, Removable hand strap, Angled adjustable stand and Photo frame. See the picture below to understand exactly how the Marware SportShell can be used together with an iPad. As construction is concerned, it’s made from hard, smooth plastic with interchangeable back covers (clear and black included in the package). A 4 hinged supports swivels out to offer low-angle typing stand functionality or a high-angle display/viewing stand, depending on what you’re seeking at that moment. If you choose the clear back (aka don’t install any back plate) you can add a 5×7 inch photo there to remind of your loved ones while traveling for example.

This is a typical high quality hard case for iPad that fits tight on your tablet, keeping all ports open. Nothing new here, but what makes the Speck Fitted case stand out is the back finish which you can match to your outfit, scarf, or tie. Unfortunately you can’t have the back of the Speck Fitted changed, unless you buy all of the models they offer, and they are not few: Houndstooth Gray, Fadeaway Gray/Black/Green, Fadeaway Gray/Black/Pink, ClassicPlaid Pink & Gray, Black & White Plaid. Life is full of choices, don’t you feel overwhelmed lately?

If you’re the kind that likes simple and dark cases, for a business look then the Shadow Snap-on case for iPad is what you’re seeking. It’s an all black snap on, polycarbonate hard plastic, with carbon fiber look back (not actual carbon fiber at it would cost more than the iPad itself). As a whole, the Shadow Snap-on provides protection from impact, offers an improved grip and a sleek look, all for as little as 20$. It shouldn’t be overlooked.

What, 120 $ for a hard case? And it’s not even here yet? Yes, that’s true, but hold on a little to find out why this is the best iPad hard case to date. First of all, the Incipio Destroyer Overkill is made from of Zytel, a hi-impact military spec nylon with 2 side rails, build out of CNC machined billet aluminum. The three-layer case also includes silicone shock absorbing skin to hold the iPad in place tight and absorb most bumps and shocks. Plus it looks great in the two color black/titanium finish that looks like it was part of the iPad initial design.

If this is not enough for you then look for another model in one of the biggest online stores that offers iPad hard cases and covers: Amazon. If you bought one of those models let the others know how it handles in time by leaving a comment in the dedicated section below.
Mach 3 Composites has a high end all carbon fiber case. This one is really a case and not a sleeve.
Wot no Contour iSee??? Definitely a brilliant hard case and the other day it was tested to the max and came out with flying colours (my iPad was dashed to a hard tiled floor by my son… no damage at all). the stand is separate but very functional. For me, worth every penny and it wasn’t dear.
