We’ve showed you a small video with the Intel Convertible Classmate PC learning tablet presented by Intel at CeBIT his week and now it’s time to get more details on it via Ubergizmo who had the chance to play with it more and told us additional info about how it is supposed to be used in academic scenarios by students and scholars.

The specs you already know from our previous post about Intel Covertible Classmate PC so let’s begin by highlighting the differences between it an a ‘regular’ convertible netbook tablet like the ASUS EEE PC T101MT. First, the Classmate has a rugged chassis to withstand accidents and all the punishment a school boy (or girl for that matter) puts on it unintentionally of course.

The Classmate Convertible PC is also designed to be used a learning tool, has an eBook reader mode with page up/page down hardware buttons, annotations software to highlight passages of text in an eBook, just like you do on a paper book, buttons for home application and a kind of rapid launcher of the most important programs which lies on top of the Windows 7 wallpaper (it’s not a different layer of software).

Additionally Intel is working on making the Convertible Classmate PC a very nice collaboration tool via a dedicated network server that helps sharing info, notes, audio files and such. Additionally when in close proximity with another Classmate PC there will be activated options for media transfers, clipboard transfers and other types of files, making this rugged tablet more than a simple computer.

Collaboration software is a real deal

Of course the presented prototype is just a sample, as Intel’s partners will be able to customize it to their needs and even make it look different, but personally I like the way it looks right now. Once we find out more we’ll let you know, as always.

Update: Intel Classmate Convertible PC is available now for 499$. Get yours from Amazon if you feel like you want to be a student again or you have kids.
