After playing with the Dell Streak at the official launch in my country it’s time to take a deeper look at the 5 inch tablet by looking at a few videos that give you an idea about how it feels in hand and in pockets, how you can choose a better keyboard and how you can read books, install new books and the Kindle app for Android.
I’ve done those videos together with my friend Mike after receiving the Dell Streak tablet. We’re going to keep the sample for a few days so if you feel like needing to know more please comment below and we’ll try and answer those questions for you.
First, let’s take a look at how you can change the default virtual keyboard of the Dell Streak to one that ditches the idiotic numpad on the right, thus making the keys larger and easier to hit for those with big fingers, like me. The application we recommend is the Swiftkey Keyboard, found in the Android Marketplace.
Second, let’s see the eBook application of the Dell Streak, how you can bookmark a page, how you can install new books, adjust settings and then we’ll show you how you can install the Kindle application that gives you access to tens of thousands of books to choose from.
And finally let’s see if the Dell Streak can really be used as a phone, thus being able to go into your pockets with ease. In our scenario it’s small enough to get into some types of pants, especially large ones, but don’t expect to be able to move freely after that. It’s also harder to take out and surely you’ll damage something inside at one point trying to sit on a chair, if you have tight pockets.
The conclusion is that Dell Streak can be customized in many ways, as expected from an Android device, so we look further to your questions on what you want to know about the Streak.
Why would you want to change the keyboard?
The one that comes with android 1.6 makes the most of a big screen.
It’s because of the num pad, which offsets the keys and makes the others pretty narrow (you lose some of the 5 inches of the screen).
